“I didn’t know until I saw it,” but “Oh my God, now I understand it.”

That’s the view of Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Ray Maguire who is doing his best to hype up the imminent launch of Gran Turismo 5.

“I was thinking, well, the world has moved on a little bit, social gaming has emerged, people are accepting smaller, bite-sized bits of gaming at very low value,” he told Eurogamer.

“Then I saw it, I saw the detail of it, and it does take your breath away. You go, ‘Oh my God, now I understand it.'”

Maguire also believes Gran Turismo 5 can do for PS3 what the third and fourth games in the series did for PS2.

“Clearly one of the games which was very important for PS2 was Gran Turismo,” he said. “It took the machine to the limits, and it continued to do that all the way through to the last iteration.

“What’s interesting is that there’s been nothing until now on GT. That’s because the hardware that we have now allows for so much more freedom. The passion and the drive for excellence that Kazunori has is taking him all the way through to try and push the technology we have now.”

Gran Turismo 5 launches around the UK tomorrow, with many stores opening at midnight.

Sure, Maguire is doing his best to sell the game, but there’s no denying that the release of Gran Turismo 5 is a huge moment in the life of the PS3.

The fifth instalment in the franchise has been teased since before the release of the PS3 and now it’s finally here, Sony is understandably ready to shout about it.

Since GT4 hit PS2 in December 2004, huge developments have been made in the genre and serious contenders have emerged in the shape of Microsoft’s Forza and EA’s NFS Shift. All eyes are now on GT5, fully expecting the game to push the genre beyond anything we’ve seen before.

Expect our verdict in the not too distant future.
