Gran Turismo 5 is finally in the hands of gamers, having taken five years to make it to that stage, but what of the next instalment in the franchise – will Gran Turismo 6 be a PS3 game?
According to series creator and head of Polyphony Digital Kazunori Yamauchi, it’s too hard to predict.
“10 years ago it was easier to predict what would happen three years in the future,” Yamauchi told Eurogamer at the Gran Turismo 5 launch in Madrid. “Nowadays no-one knows what happens in the future. In three years, we don’t know what will happen.”
Pressed a little harder on whether the game would miss the PS3, Yamauchi is described as having “laughed and shrugged”.
Yamauchi also assured fans that the release of Gran Turismo 5 is just the start, with his team planning to upgrade the game “every week, every month”. He also addressed concerns about the online functionality, stating “online updates are planned of course for leaderboards and matchmaking – [they’re] all planned in the process of evolution”.
Gran Turismo 5 is out now for PS3. Look out for our review later today.
Given the planned 10-year lifespan of the PS3 and the hope that a new game in the GT franchise won’t take another five years to produce, it’s fair to assume fans should get a second PS3 Gran Turismo before the console is succeeded.
As for the Polyphony’s continued support for GT5, that’s good to hear, but some would argue features such as matchmaking should have been present from day one.
