Sony’s AI department has announced it’ll be launching a project later this week with Gran Turismo 7 developer Polyphony Digital.

Though details are currently hazy, the official Sony AI Twitter account teases a few details. (Spotted by Video Games Chronicle.) It’s “excited to launch our Gaming Flagship and announce a breakthrough project in AI created through a collab with Polyphony Digital”. While sketchy, the gaming mention seems to imply it’s relevant to next month’s Gran Turismo 7.

Perhaps Polyphony Digital have Gran Turismo 7 ‘s AI answer to Forza Horizon‘s Drivatars? A staple of the series, it uses your play data from Forza games to create a customised AI version of your driver. That data is then sent to your friends games, and plays as a version of you. Since Forza Horizon 2 on the Xbox One, this data has moved to the cloud and even carries into subsequent Forza games. Gran Turismo has never really had an equivalent, until (potentially) now.

Or it could be something entirely different, but fingers crossed it still relates to the game. Start your speculation engines and we’ll all find out what this AI project is on Wednesday, February 9. For now, you can check out the brief teaser below. Gran Turismo 7 meanwhile arrives on March 4 on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 and we got to see a big lovely chunk of it during last week’s State of Play.
