Gran Turismo 5 boasts over a staggering 1,000 cars, but only around 200 of these are classed as premium models – those made specifically to utilise the power of the PS3. The remaining 800 are based on older models, created for PS2 games and are noticeably inferior.

The good news is that Polyphony president Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed to Japanese video game magazine Famitsu that the studio plans to upgrade the standard cars models to premium status. It’s not known how many cars will be upgraded.

While we’re pleased to hear that some of the shoddier car models are being updated, we can’t help but feel that GT5 players would rather new content than updates to existing content.

The move does, however, enable Polyphony to gradually increase the number of premium models, meaning the next entry in the franchise will also benefit.
