Whatever mode you decide to tackle Kratos’ latest adventure on, you’re promised a stunning time. Here, we discuss what one could be best for you to help you decide.

God of War Ragnarok difficulty settings

Here are the difficulty settings, along with what sort of experience they will provide.

  • Story: For those who want an experience with the least focus on combat.
  • Grace: For players who want story focused gameplay with some focus on combat.
  • Balance: Equally focused on combat and gameplay.
  • No Mercy: For those who want more demanding combat.
  • God of War: For those who want the game as difficult as possible. Note, you will only be use this mode if you have selected a new game. You cannot switch to this if you have started the game on another lesser difficulty mode

Story level is perfect for those who do not want to be challenged by the game’s combat sections. Instead, you’ll focus on enjoying the story uninterrupted – which is perfect for gamers who want an undisturbed experience.

Ragnarok is incredibly cinematic so it can be jarring if you die multiple times. Enemies will be dealt with easily, and you’ll require less weapon expertise to progress through to harder foes. The flip side is that you’ll not need to worry as much about armour and other gameplay features.

Grace ramps up the difficulty somewhat, but not enough to be too much of a challenge. The focus here is still the story, but expect some resistance on harder bosses later on in the game.

Balance as the name suggests, tries to balance combat and story. Enemies will take more damage and you’ll need to think about how approach the combat sections more. Whereas spamming the buttons could somewhat be relied upon in Story, here in Balance you’ll need to have a decent grasp of enemy timing, or risk decent damage against you.

No Mercy, which in our view is the best mode to start on, provides a very hard but rewarding combat experience. Enemies are fierce and wrong moves will cost you dearly. It’s for this reason that we recommend starting the game at this level.

Not only will this make the experience as rewarding as possible, but to survive you’ll need to master combat and make real, meaningful choices when it comes to armour selection.

Finally, for those who want the Ultimate Challenge, opt for God of War difficulty. This is not recommended for those who are not masters of the original game’s combat.

Enemies will destroy you in seconds. This will however expand the game’s lifespan, as it’ll take far longer to battle through. The downside is it’ll lead to an interrupted experience if you’re new to the series as you will die often.
