Gears/Gears of War developer The Coalition has released a pair of videos showing off a technical test of their work so far with Unreal Engine 5.

The videos themselves are both running on an Xbox Series X. Using real time lighting and reflections, the first entitled ‘Alpha Point’ gives us a look at the sort of thing possible in terms of environments. The second Character Rendering Test meanwhile shows off an incredibly detailed character model, made up of 160k triangles on the body and 31K on the face.

While neither video contains anything that may make it into a potential Gears 6 on Unreal Engine 5, they do offer up a tantalising prospect to the level of detail we can perhaps expect in future games. Both videos were first shown at this year’s Games Developers Conference, which took place remotely from California last weekend.

The Coalition revealed it was working with the Unreal Engine 5 back in May. At the time, it said it would be using the technology for “multiple new next generation projects” and it’s believed that one of them might not even be Gears related. Other studios currently confirmed to be using Unreal Engine 5 include Ninja Theory on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and Square Enix with Dragon Quest XII.
