The Coalition has announced it’s removing the Map Builder mode from Gears 5 in its latest title update.

The news was announced via the game’s official Twitter account as a PSA last night. While not going into too much detail, the team claimed the move would allow them to “focus on future projects”. The two achievements tied to the game will be unlocked for all players, and there’ll be rewards for those that have. Those with ‘I Made it All By Myself’ will get an exclusive banner, while ‘Homegrown Hive’ completionists get 10K coins.

Gears 5‘s Map Builder originally arrived with the game at launch, allowing players to create maps for Hive mode. That was the shooter’s three player co-op mode, that challenged players to take on the Locust in bespoke arenas. It received its own focused Hivebusters campaign DLC a year after the launch of the original game, but it never quite seemed to be the series’ most talked-about addition.

As for those future projects, The Coalition is currently busy getting to grips with Unreal Engine 5. While a new Gears game hasn’t been announced, rumours from January pointed towards a potential remastered Gears of War collection. However, it’s also been rumoured that the studio is also working on a brand new IP. We’ll have to wait and see if we get confirmation on either or any of these projects – or something entirely new -in the near future.
