In a somewhat controversial move, Epic Games has announced the November 24 release of the Versus Booster Map Pack, offering five new maps – including those from Horde Command Pack – for free.

Included in the free download are classic map remakes Bullet Marsh and Clocktower, plus the trio of maps from the Horde Command Pack: Azura, Rustlung, and Blood Drive. All maps will be available on public matchmaking via dedicated servers.

Wondering why you should opt for the 800 MS Points Horde Command Pack over the free Versus Booster Pack? Well, for your points you get extra fortification upgrades, three new playable characters, two new weapon skins and the all important Achievements.

Epic is also hosting a Gears of War 3 Double XP event for the next two weeks.

We can see why some fans will be getting a little agitated at the free DLC. Sure you don’t get the extra fortifications and other items, but the fact so much of the Horde Command Pack content will be made available for free is going to sting for those which have already parted with 800 MS Points or the 2400 MS Points for Gears of War 3 Season Pass.
