A new studio named Gardens has been established by former Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch developers.

The collective will operate as a remote studio, but based mostly in LA and Portland, Oregon. The new studio’s mission statement is to “create vibrant online games that foster meaningful multiplayer moments and relationships between players around the world”.

Leading the outfit are co-founders Chris Bell, Lexie Dostal and Stephen Bell. Their combined credits include Journey, What Remains of Edith Finch, Dustforce and Blaseball. Other members of the studio include an art team that’s led by Ryan Benno. He’s a former senior environment artist on Insomniac games like Ratchet & Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

It sounds from the press release that these environments will be a big focus of its first game, which it confirms is already under way. While it doesn’t have a title yet, Gardens claim it will include “artfully crafted, living environments”. It also claims these environments will be “designed to foster rich multiplayer interactions” that encourage “lasting friendships”.

In addition, the team’s now hiring for more positions on their website, such as 3D artists, animators and engineers. They’ve already attracted some impressive talent, including people who’ve worked on games like Skyrim & Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

There’s no word on platforms or dates yet, as you can probably expect at this early stage. Nevertheless, we’ll keep our eyes open and let you know should we hear more on Gardens’ first project.
