Games Workshop says Space Marine 2 has set ‘a new benchmark’ for Warhammer games after decades of ‘niche PC’ releases

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the best-selling Warhammer game of all time with over 7 million copies sold across PC and console. 

After praising the game for giving the company its best revenue ever, Warhammer company Games Workshop has revealed that the title has now set a “new benchmark” for video games based on the IP.

Speaking in the company’s recent financial report, Games Workshop explained that the company mostly focused on allowing “niche PC games” instead of decently-budgeted console projects. 

While Space Marine 2 has been very popular on PC, especially with Saber Interactive’s huge modding support, Games  Workshop explained that they see the game as “primarily a console game”. 

“Our video game success to date has predominantly been in the more niche PC games segment,” the company explained. “Space Marine 2, primarily a console game, has showcased our IP to a wider audience and, as a result, set a new benchmark in terms of success for a Warhammer video game.”

Games Workshop explained that it is “actively exploring further console and mobile opportunities” to continue pushing the Warhammer IP to more audiences. Of course, the company mentioned the early in-development Space Marine 3, which promises a bigger and better take on the series, as one upcoming project. 

Despite viewing the popular third-person action title as a console game, Games Workshop also has no plans to give up its “niche PC games segment” stating that its success provides “significant long-term revenue” to the hobbyist IP. 

Games Workshop mentions the upcoming Dawn of War – Definitive Edition and the boomer shooter Boltgun 2 and Owlcat’s upcoming Dark Heresy RPG as upcoming PC games that will continue to service the ever-growing 40K brand. 

As for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, that title is still growing with more post-launch content in the works. Later this year, Saber Interactive is releasing a major anniversary update, and an entire second year of free content is planned for the brilliant co-op game.
