Another genre-defining era of Fortnite is well underway, but all of the shiny new goodies and game modes included with the latest update are overshadowed by one persistent issue: weapon readability. Though the Epic Games battle royale is home to various unique weapons that would make any arsenal exponentially deadlier, players are saying that the terrible labeling on each one makes playing the game unnecessarily tricky.
In fact, following the Fortnite patch notes Epic released on January 2, 2024, some fans are complaining that the newest weapon addition, the Enforcer AR, has only made the problem worse. According to a post from the Fortnite subreddit, the Enforcer’s design, similar to a sniper rifle, combined with the poor weapon readability, ended up costing them a kill. The same player would then note that this issue permeates nearly every in-game gun, with them constantly mistaking one weapon for another.
They added: “The only weapon with a model that I can reliably tell apart from the others is the Pump Shotgun and the Pistol,” mainly because both weapons’ designs are evident. Naturally, many players responding below the thread agreed with the post creator’s sentiment, with one disgruntled commenter noting: “It really annoys me that the auto-shotgun looks like a rifle or SMG. I don’t know why, it just does.”
Of course, a few users claimed that this issue didn’t affect them as much, as one self-proclaimed “super casual player” said: “After a week, I already knew what each weapon looked like and was able to differentiate them. You can also read the name when you pick it up, or even before then.” Other Redditors then chimed in with their own experiences, essentially labeling the weapon readability problem as a non-issue.
Unfortunately, whether Epic Games will address the Fortnite weapon readability issue remains unclear, as the game’s developer has yet to comment on these complaints.
