Fortnite refund has been a popular topic over the past few days. Last week, almost a million Fortnite players received a sum totaling $126 million, which is quite impressive. This amount of money will surely generate buzz in any context, so it is no surprise that many players have talked about it.
Interestingly, the $126 million refund is not the only one that Fortnite players will get. Last year, they received $72 million, and the final round of refunds, which should take place in 2026, will include more than $50 million. Why is this happening? Well, here’s everything you need to know.
Why is Epic Games sending refunds to Fortnite players?
Back when Fortnite was released in 2017, it looked much different than the game we have now. Not only was the gameplay different, but the user interface was as well. Back then, it was very easy to perform accidental purchases in the Item Shop, which is why Epic Games got into trouble.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined Epic $275 million and ordered the company to pay an additional $245 million in refunds. This process began in 2022 and is still going on.
These are the players who are eligible for a refund:
- Players who were charged in-game currency for items they didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022
- Children who made charges to credit cards without parents’ knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
- Owners of accounts that were locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after complaining to credit card companies about wrongful charges
After sending out $126 million in refunds, the FTC also extended the deadline to apply for them. Thanks to this, eligible players can still apply for the Fortnite refund until July 9. It should also be noted that only players residing in the United States are eligible to apply for the refund, as the FTC’s authority and refund program operate exclusively within the country.
