Industry veteran and former Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has joined Amazon Game Studios to head-up a new team based in San Diego, Amazon has announced.

“John’s pioneering work helped define the modern MMO, and his influence can be felt in thousands of games that followed,” commented Amazon. “He helped create the blueprint for fusing massive game worlds with vibrant player communities, a vision that we share at Amazon Game Studios. That’s why we’re excited John has joined Amazon Games Studios to lead this new team.”

Smedley and the team are working on an “ambitious new project that taps into the power of the AWS Cloud and Twitch to connect players around the globe in a thrilling new game world”.

Smedley led SOE (later Daybreak) for 13 years, but departed in 2015 to form Pixelmage. The venture proved short lived, shutting down earlier this year after debut game The Hero’s Song failed in a Kickstarter funding effort.
