Final Fantasy XV sold more than 5 million units on its day of release, Square Enix has announced, making it the fastest-selling Final Fantasy game ever.
It isn’t clear from Square’s press release, however, whether the figure correlates to units shipped or sold through to consumers. I’ve checked in with them to ask.
The record-breaking launch shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though: Final Fantasy XV is the first core Final Fantasy game to launch simultaneously worldwide. Previous games in the series have always shipped in Japan first before rolling out elsewhere across the globe.
It has, however, broken a further record in Japan by becoming the most downloaded game on day one ever, and another across Asia (excluding Japan) for total day one game sales.
Final Fantasy XV launched worldwide on Tuesday, November 29. Alice scored it 8/10 and praised it for its characters and combat, calling it a “game about friendship”.
