Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XV has sold 7.7 million copies worldwide.

The epic bromance RPG launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2016, and later arrived on PC earlier this year. The sales milestone takes into account both digital and retail sales of Final Fantasy XV, although it's not known if it includes the Royale Edition or not.

Its success is probably not much of a surprise considering the game sold five million copies in its first 24 hours, becoming the fastest-selling entry in the venerable JRPG series to date.

Final Fantasy XV has received extensive post-launch support over the past 18 months or so, although Square Enix has confirmed that its roadmap has now extended into 2019.

While it may have come out less than two years ago, Final Fantasy XV had been in the works for a decade prior to that. Square Enix had originally planned the game for PlayStation 3 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, although this idea was scrapped and revamped into the title we have today.

Square Enix is currently working on a full remake of Final Fantasy VII, although it doesn't seem likely it'll see the light of day before 2020.
