Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, a fully-redesigned version of 2010’s struggling MMO FFXIV Online, due to launch on PS3 and PC “soon”.

A Realm Reborn has been “rebuilt from the ground up”, reckons Square, and features a new world and storyline.

Funnily enough, the storyline centers around “the core concept of rebirth”. Square, you so crazy!

“Since announcing our plans for the future of the title last October, we have been working tirelessly to include all of the elements that we have promised in FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn, which we announced today,” said Naoki Yoshida, Producer/Director of FINAL FANTASY XIV.

“This new title not only becomes a symbol of a completely new FINAL FANTASY XIV, but also marks the beginning of a new stage as the latest title in the FINAL FANTASY series. I hope you’re looking forward to it!”

Can’t see why we wouldn’t be, Naoki.

Final Fantasy XIV launched in September 2010 to a poor critical reception, with reviewers criticising the game for its “broken interface” and “nonsensical player limitations”.

Multiple improvements to the game were made via subsequent patches, until Square announced that it would be relaunching the game as Final Fantasy XIV 2.0, featuring a “fundamental reworking of in-game maps” and “the implementation of a new graphics engine”.
