Final Fantasy VII Remake will have a turn-based Classic Mode as well as a real-time action RPG style of play, as confirmed at Tokyo Game Show (via Polygon).

Producer Yoshinori Kitase said that although a great many features of the original Final Fantasy VII have been updated and refined for its modern reboot, classic JRPG gameplay has not been left behind. The new game’s Classic Mode will provide player the option of turn-based combat in which battle moves will be chosen from a combat menu.

A thread of tweets from the official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter account explained a little more about how Classic Mode will work. Reproducing the original’s turn-based style, the ATB Gauge will fill up by itself: ‘The player does not need to do anything and the character fights automatically, charging up their ATB Gauge.’ Then the player is able to utilise the character’s combat moves just like Final Fantasy VII, but this time it’ll be much shinier and glitzier on the PlayStation 4’s hardware

Those who choose Classic Mode won’t need to ‘worry about the action side of the combat system,’ Square Enix said, ‘and can instead focus on selecting commands, making it possible to play [Final Fantasy VII Remake] as if it were a classic menu-based RPG.’ Fans have lots to look forward to in the reboot, as the new TGS trailer showed off makeovers for main characters, references to the original’s scenes, and updated mechanics

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
