Shinji Hashimoto, a veteran of the Final Fantasy series, is retiring from Square Enix after twenty-seven years at the company.

Hashimoto started at Square Enix in 1995, and he has worked on almost every Final Fantasy game since then. He also had a hand in creating the Kingdom Hearts series, as well.

In an announcement on Twitter (via VGC), Hashimoto said:

“Today, Tuesday, May 31, I will be retiring. I would like to thank everyone in various fields for their support during my tenure. From now on, I would like to support you as a Square Enix fan. Thank you very much.”

As you can see, he appears to be brandishing a plushie chocobo in triumph. And who would begrudge him that?

In other recent Final Fantasy news, Tetsuya Nomura, the series’ celebrated developer and director, recently hinted at exciting news being on the way in June.

Nomura spoke during a livestream focussed on Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a mobile battle royale. In it, he mentioned that next month would be the twenty-fifth anniversary of the original release, on PlayStation. And he said to expect some news.

We will keep our eyes out next month for chocobo—or possibly cloud—related updates.
