Square Enix has declared that it’ll make the recent Stormblood expansion free to all active subscribers of its massively popular MMO Final Fantasy 14 ahead of the game’s Patch 6.4 update next month.

The limited time offer will be offered to all existing owners as well as new adopters of the Final Fantasy 14 Online Starter Edition from now until May 8, and is valid for both the PC version of the game and those playing on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 too.

Stormblood is the massively multiplayer game’s second expansion since its A Realm Reborn relaunch, and was the first pack to increase the base game’s level cap to Level 70. It saw the debut of two new jobs – Samurai and Red Mage and also introduced new locations including the Ruby Sea and the Azim Steppe.

The giveaway is presumably to help get more players back into the game ahead of the launch of Patch 6.4, also known as ‘The Dark Throne’. This update will arrive in May 2023 and was detailed in the game’s most recent ‘Letter from the Producer’ live broadcast over the weekend.

The patch will raise the level cap of the Blue Mage job to 80, as well as give them some new gear. There’ll also be an extension to the game’s main story, with some new main scenario quests added on top of the final installment of the Pandemonium Raids, known as Anabaseios.

Elsewhere, there’ll be a new Dungeon named The Aetherfont, new Trials for players to tackle (The Voidcast Dias) and – especially relevant to those picking up the free Stormblood expansion – a Duty Support System Update that adds the functionality to a number of Stormblood scenario dungeons. This will let players hire a group of NPC followers as party members to help clear the dungeon; perfect for if you’re struggling to get a group of friends to return to complete those dungeons.

Finally, this week also sees the return of the Easter-themed Hatching-tide Event in game, which is running from now until April 10th. These limited time quests will earn players some exclusive rewards if they complete them, including themed gear, emotes and more.
