In what comes as a complete and utter surprise, Electronic Arts has announced that FIFA 18 will be released on September 29, 2017. Cue sigh of relief.

Also noteworthy, the cover star has been revealed as none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. The quite well-known Portuguese superstar has been winning seemingly everything over the past year. After winning the Champions League (for the fourth time) at the weekend, becoming the latest FIFA cover star can now be added to his accolades.

Taking on the mantle from Lionel Messi who has previously featured on four FIFA covers, Cristiano Ronaldo features for the first ever time.

‘EA SPORTS has today announced that Real Madrid star and four time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be this year’s FIFA 18 cover star,’ reads an EA statement.

Ronaldo added: ‘It is a real pleasure to be on the cover of FIFA 18, it’s a great feeling and I am grateful to have been chosen’.

EA confirmed this news in the most official way possible: by way of a tweet replete with reveal trailer. The reveal shows the gameplay engine in action. Presumably this is taken from the Frostbite engine, which powers the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Not content with just unleashing the trailer, EA also took the opportunity to reveal some more details for the game.

There will be three different editions of FIFA 18. The standard edition comes with a Cristiano Ronaldo loan card for Ultimate Team, £10 / $15 worth of Jumbo Premium Gold Ultimate Team Packs, as well as eight special edition kits.

The Ronaldo Edition has £40 / $60 worth of packs, and you get the game three days early on top of what you get in the standard edition.

The Icon Edition comes with £80 / $120 worth of packs, everything you get in the Ronaldo edition, as well as Team of the Week Loan Player Packs, and a Ronaldo Nazário loan card.

The Brazilian Ronaldo Nazário (the ‘real’ Ronaldo), headlines FUT Icons, a new feature which will no doubt have more details to come later this week from E3.
