Microsoft and Lionhead have revealed some new features of the Xbox 360 exclusive Fable 2, the follow-up to the successful Fable which sold over three million units worldwide.
Set some 500 years after the original game, Fable 2 will feature an epic story and innovative real-time gameplay, where the player’s every decision defines who they become and the world they live in.
Now players will have the choice to play as a man or woman, get married, have children and live a life they choose. Because the game offers a much deeper level of choice this means the consequences and therefore the game will be dramatically different for each player.
Combat has been completely redesigned, enabling players to master hand weapons such as swords and maces, ranged weapons such as bows and guns, and a new magic system. All this can be combined to form a mixed combat style, all the time using only a single button on the controller.
As previously revealed, Fable 2 will see players teamed up with a canine companion. Man’s best friend becomes a hero’s best friend and will act as a protector, compass and more. Simply by feeding the dog it will love the master unconditionally, something Lionhead says will create a bond that “sets up emotion-filled journeys all throughout” the game.
Revealed this week at GDC was cooperative play, enabling two players to experience the world of Fable together. When joining another player’s game it will be possible to customise how everything that is gained in the session is shared. This means one player could opt to take all the gold and the other to receive all the experience points. What’s earned can then be taken back into your own game.
Also announced at GDC was a selection of Xbox LIVE Arcade mini-games from Carbonated Games that will enable players to begin earning in-game currency before the release of Fable 2. Simply by downloading and completing exclusive mini-games players will earn gold and will be able to purchase weapons, armour and more for their hero.
So far Molyneux’s latest is looking very impressive and could end up delivering on some very impressive claims. There’s no firm release just yet, but Microsoft has confirmed it’ll be out this year.
