Blue Scarab, a games studio consisting of World of Warcraft veterans and ex-Helldivers developers, is working on a “true crime, horseriding MMORPG” dubbed Equinox: Homecoming to deliver a unique product in an industry the studio believes is littered with the same types of games.

Blue Scarab CEO Colin Cragg, who himself has a long history of MMO development at Funcom, explained that the team wanted to make something wholly unique in an overflowing industry of repetition. As companies continue to chase trends as soon as they release, Cragg believes there’s space for something different.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Cragg said the team is attempting to create a game for a different demographic to most games.

“What would happen if we actually approached a title for [women] with the same seriousness and budget that we would give to a double A kind of production for any other demographic?” Cragg, asked. “Traditional, you know, teenage dudes in black T-shirts and jeans.”

With games like Infinity Nikki and InZoi targeting a more feminine demographic, the team at Blue Scarab aims to use their experience with games like World of Warcraft, Helldivers and more to create a game for that audience. While some gamers may balk at this, it’s clear that more “girly games” are becoming more popular than ever as developers actually account for that audience.

“The entire industry is totally and completely clogged with releases with $300 million budgets that all focus on the exact same gameplay,” he says. “Like, you’re ignoring 52% of the world population.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the traditional manly games are going anywhere anytime soon. After all, that’s another half of the world population, but the ex-World of Warcraft devs are excited to be working on something not only unique but also working within “guidelines” that are completely different to what most developers are used to.

Equinox: Homecoming doesn’t currently have a release date, but potential players can wishlist the game on Steam right here.
