The free-to-play model for long-running MMO EverQuest has finally launched after 13 years of a subscription.

In an official statement, franchise director of development Dave Georgeson celebrated the change-over:

“With one of the most loyal player communities in the industry, we believe that after 13 years we need to provide them with a wide variety of ways to play the game on their terms. Players can now choose to play in a way that suits them best and continue to expand their game experience.”

The anniversary celebration which is currently in process – coinciding with the free-to-play switch – will add content updates and in-game activities for users.

The game will also now be split into three tiers: Free, Silver for $5.99 per month, and Gold for $14.99 per month. The former two tiers in the list will include some restrictions on what is actually available to users, however those who decide to pay a recurring subscription will be granted bonuses and receive 500 Station Cash per month as long as they stay on an auto-renew payment plan.
