E3 2023 has been cancelled after the event “did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

This news comes from IGN, as sources confirmed the cancellation via email, but not before stating that it “remains a beloved event and brand”, implying we still may see E3 return in the future.

The E3 2023 dates were confirmed in September 2022, as it was due to be the first in-person E3 event since 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rumours surrounding a potential cancellation had been swirling for a few days, after the three big console developers – PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo – all announced they wouldn’t be attending, alongside Ubisoft, one of the biggest publishers in the world. Each of them were planning to host their own virtual showcases around the same sort of timeframe instead, separate from the E3 event.

The event, due to take place from June 13 – 16, was to be split into two sections. The first two days were due to be “Business Days”, where industry professionals and media could see upcoming games behind closed doors, while the latter two days were dubbed “Gamer Days”, allowing the public to attend, play some games early, along with the chance to “connect with developers, content creators, media personalities, and more.”
