Dishonored appears to have performed well for publisher Bethesda, becoming the UK’s best launch for a new IP in 2012, but commercial success doesn’t appear to affect designer Harvey Smith who suggests he’d be happy with or without a sequel.

“Part of me would love to see future games leverage this world,” he told Kotaku, “and part of me would love it if the vault door was just closed and that’s it. This is your one view into the Empire of the Isles and into the city of Dunwall.”

Asked to choose one decision of the other, Smith laughed and said: “I can’t say!”

There’s certainly an argument in favour of leaving the game as a standalone experience – sequels could tarnish the original – but in the end money talks and Bethesda won’t turn its back on the chance to turn the IP into a franchise if the opportunity is there.
