Rod Fergusson, Blizzard’s general manager of Diablo, is leaving the studio after half-a-decade of working on the series. Previously known for heralding the Gears of War series, Fergusson’s surprise departure comes as the game’s second expansion rears its head.

Diablo lead departs Blizzard

Announced on Twtter, Fergusson confirmed his departure to fans, explaining that it’s time for him to “see what’s next” and find a new adventure. The series manager told fans that the teams behind all current projects, Immortal and D4, are “set up for success”, teasing the latter’s upcoming major update.

“After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four big launches, it’s time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what’s next,” Fergusson wrote. “The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together and looking forward to what comes next for Diablo, and for me.”

While Fergusson didn’t tease what actually is coming next for the series, it seems that a massive overhaul is coming either at the end of this year or in early 2026. Alongside the upcoming aforementioned expansion, which may be taking players back to Westmarch, Blizzard has shown content creators a sneak peak of some game-changing updates, and they’re allegedly very exciting.

Prior to his departure, Fergusson explained that Blizzard has a lengthy ten-year internal roadmap for the future of Diablo 4. Alongside continued expansions, which will not be annually released, the roadmap includes key upgrades and changes that will occur along the way. It’s all very secretive.

Since the launch of Diablo 4 in 2023, the game has suffered heavily from its seasonal content structure. However, with Blizzard seemingly changing tact around the release of Season 10, could we actually see proper, meaningful changes coming in the future? God, I hope so.
