Blizzard’s first expansion for Diablo has released on all platforms, bringing a host of new content to the action RPG in the form of Vessel of Hatred. However, as fans hit credits on the expansion’s campaign, many have found themselves disappointed with the final results.
With unsatisfying Runewords implementations, a new endgame that sucks for solo players and a story spoiled by its launch trailer, VoH is far from the huge revision that Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls was. While not terrible by a longshot, the expansion isn’t hitting as hard as it could.
Diablo 4 fans aren’t happy
Just days after the release of Vessel of Hatred, countless fans have taken to social media to complain about the new expansion’s story content. Alongside a slew of bugs, the reduced amount of campaign content and the disappointing storyline has turned many players against the expansion, despite the awesome new Spiritborn class.

In a post on the Diablo 4 subreddit with over 1,000 upvotes, fans complained about the state of the Vessel of Hatred campaign. Many of the complaints revolved around Neyrelle with many claiming the character’s “obnoxious” behaviour.
Players feel that the expansion doesn’t feel like a typical Diablo expansion like the second game’s Lord of Destruction. Instead, the paid expansion has been likened to a free season update or, at its worst, a small update for World of Warcraft.
“We paid full price for a .1 WoW patch,” one fan said on Reddit, a sentiment echoed by other players. “Campaign? You mean the seasonal story? Cause what we were given didn’t feel like a $40 story,” said another.
Hope for next time
Despite the negative reception for the new expansion, fans are hopeful that the next one will be better. After Diablo 4 was thrust into development to end support for its predecessor, the knowledge that the new game will receive more classic expansions offers tonnes of room for improvement.
With the Mephisto storyline now wrapped up, Diablo 4’s next expansion has unlimited possibility to go in a tonne of new directions, and fans are excited for the future.
“First half was pretty good and engaging, second half with Neyrelle was meh. Eru’s betrayal was complete nonsense,” one fan explained. “However next expansion could be awesome. As long as it’s not contrived filler.”
Nevertheless, Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred did launch alongside some awesome changes, including the removal of Stygian Stones. Hopefully, Blizzard can continue refining the game until the release of the next expansion.
