Fans who didn’t play through the PTR server for Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred and are trying to avoid spoilers may find themselves upset at the expansion’s new trailer. In a masterful gambit, Blizzard appears to have spoiled its final boss just days before launch.

While some fans have played through the expansion already to identify bugs such as infinite damage and quick levelling, most have yet to play the game. Nevertheless, the newest trailer features a tonne of spoilers. Obviously, spoilers ahead.

Diablo 4 trailer spoils expansion finale

The main story for Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred revolves around the Lord of Hatred, Mephisto. Neyrelle, an adventurer from the base game, is currently travelling with Mephisto trapped inside a Soul Stone, attempting to keep the demon’s corruption at bay while she tries to find a way to rid Prime Evil from the world.

This core storyline has been known since the first trailer for Vessel of Hatred earlier this year, but Blizzard’ new “launch trailer” reveals what might be Mephisto’s final boss fight. In the trailer, Mephisto takes on the form of a tentacle-wielding wolf, a form which has not be seen in previous Diablo games.

Of course, it is possible that Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred could hold another final boss, either another form for Mephisto or something new entirely. With the expansion adding the new Heir of Perdition Mythic Unique item to deal extra damage against new (to D4) angel enemies, players could end up battling an angel as their final encounter.

Nevertheless, it is still surprising for Blizzard to reveal such a huge story beat within its trailer, especially considering the fact that the studio is typically very reserved in this regard. With just over a week to go until Vessel of Hatred releases on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, it is quite upsetting to have such a big moment spoiled already.

Still exciting

Despite the narrative spoilers, Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred is still exciting. With the new 2.0 update changing progression, removing Stygian Stones and adding Diablo 2’s Runewords system, there’s a lot of content to enjoy.

The new expansion also comes with a brand-new co-op focused endgame, a new Spiritborn class, mercenary recruitment and even a party finder system. All of this releases on October 8, 2024.
