A large portion of the Diablo 4 community is now celebrating the fact that they can pet the dogs found throughout various settlements within Sanctuary. However, you may want to hold off on giving these innocent creatures a few head scratches as the result you get from doing so is a little less than ideal.

Now, even though giving dogs head scratches isn’t as difficult as learning how to get a mount in Diablo 4, you may still be confused at how to do it yourself due to its unintuitive nature. Luckily, you’ll only need to use any friendly emote you have equipped on your emote wheel while you’re beside a dog in order to pet them. Since most games typically give you a prompt when interacting with animals, most fans aren’t able to figure out the unique method Blizzard’s introduced.

Before you start finding and petting every dog in Sanctuary, though, we wouldn’t recommend doing so as you may end up getting them killed. This is because as soon as you show these animals some love, they will start following you everywhere you go – including outside of town. Naturally, the ruthless beasts and beings you encounter in the wilderness will attack you and your dog upon seeing you, which will inevitably lead to your companion’s untimely death.

You also can’t simply shake them off once they’ve started following you as there isn’t an explicit option that can get them to leave. Of course, you can always just teleport to another settlement, but what kind of owner just leaves its pet alone? With this in mind, your only real option is to bring them with you on your adventure, which unfortunately leads to their unwanted demise.

So before you start making friends with every dog you see during your playthrough, we suggest thinking of the consequences beforehand or you might just be putting yourself in league with Lilith and her inhumane demon army.
