Alongside the upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion, Blizzard is also releasing its huge Diablo 4 2.0 update for all players. As the update plans to rework progression in its entirety, Blizzard is also reworking summoning by removing everyone’s Stygian Stones.

No more Stygian Stones for Diablo 4

In the current version of Diablo 4, players have to collect Stygian Stones to summon bosses at their altars. Stones are able to be easily farmed via The Pit and three are needed to summon Torment versions of bosses from The Ladder.

However, Stygian Stones will no longer be required in the upcoming overhaul of the game. As PTR players were busy dealing infinite damage and exploiting hilarious levelling bugs, they also noticed that the stones were no longer needed for summoning.

In a recent tweet, Diablo’s Global Director of Community Adam Fletcher confirmed that Stygian Stones are indeed being removed from summoning. However, players’ stones will be converted to a gold value when the 2.0 update arrives.

“These will be converted to a significant amount of gold,” Fletcher told fans in the Twitter post.

At the time of writing, it’s not known how much gold players will get per stone. However, some fans expect a small amount of gold, despite how much effort it takes to grind the drops in the game’s current form.

Clever changes, but is it enough?

With the arrival of Diablo 4 2.0, Blizzard is making some great changes to progression. Additionally, removing the annoying grind for Stygian Stones is great way of keeping players in the game, but with new endgame content leaving solo players behind and a lacklustre launch for the returning Runewords mechanic, is D4 still in the right direction?

As fans are well aware, it took quite a while for Diablo 3 to finally become something truly great. After Reaper of Souls and Loot 2.0, Blizzard turned an awful launch into a long-running success. While the fourth game’s launch blows its predecessor out of the water, it’ll hopefully get even better as time goes on.

Diablo 4 is available now on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. The game can also be played via Xbox Game Pass or Nvidia GeForce Now.
