Destiny 2 Episode Heresy is set to be absolutely massive! Bungie is bringing back an “old favorite” alongside some awesome new guns, and they are also bringing forth a plethora of buffs and nerfs. However, we now know that Episode Heresy will also see the inclusion of a collaboration with the one and only Star Wars. While the crossover is huge with awesome new skins, the Star Wars collaboration does risk Destiny 2 becoming more like Fortnite while repeating the sins of Call of Duty.

Destiny 2 x Star Wars collaboration risks D2 Fortniteification

During the Destiny 2 Episode Heresy livestream, Bungie announced a collaboration with Star Wars that will release on February 4th. Basically, the crossover includes new skins for each of the D2 classes. It’s the black, stylish Death Troopers for Hunters, the alluring red of the Royal Guard for Warlocks, and it’s the iconic and traditional Stormtrooper attire for Titans.

Admittedly, the skins look gorgeous. They looked great in the movies, despite all the faults of the Disney Star Wars sequels, and they will look breathtaking in Bungie’s universe. There is a lot more than just the skins, including emotes, finisher, and ship yet to be revealed, but it’s the costumes that are the highlight.

Again, the skins do look great, and the crossover should be a massive success for Bungie. The Destiny 2 player count plummeted by 90% at the end of 2024, and a crossover with arguably the biggest sci-fi universe of all time is the perfect way to get many people playing Destiny 2 again, especially after Revenant Act 3 underwhelmed. Not to mention there’s also the monetary aspect that should, in theory, make Bungie a lot of dough.

However, while the skins look amazing and should be successful, they do risk D2 becoming even more like Fortnite and Call of Duty. Fortnite is famous for crossing over with hundreds of iconic IPs across video games, movies, music, and more, while Call of Duty has been doing the same in recent years, with unhappy fans accusing Activision of pimping CoD out to anyone with some money.

Star Wars is by no means the first collaboration for Destiny. After all, there has been Assassin’s Creed armour, along with Street Fighter and The Witcher. However, what made these collaborations more palatable is that the designs and costumes were heavily based on these licenses, whereas Star Wars’ iconic Stormtrooper armor is just copy and pasted into the world of Destiny 2.

Destiny is a self-contained sci-fi universe, so seeing full unaltered and uninspired Star Wars armor in-game doesn’t fit Bungie’s aesthetic or world. A lot of players are understandably still excited simply because it’s Star Wars, but there are fans on Reddit who don’t like the “Fortniteification” that is happening.

Hopefully Star Wars will be the last collaboration where creative liberties are not taken with the armor designs. There’s nothing wrong with collaborations, and it would be awesome to see more such as Warhammer 40K, but the crossovers are best when creativity is involved rather than looks just being copy and pasted over. Destiny 2 has a fantastic world of its own, and seeing full Star Wars Stormtroopers will be jarring, and it will be even worse if it happens with more licenses in the future.
