While we might never get Death Stranding 3 due to Hideo Kojima being super busy with other projects including OD and Physint, the good news is that the series is being expanded with an anime that is set to come to Disney+ sometime in 2027.
As per the official Kojima Productions website, Hideo Kojima was on stage at the Disney+ Originals Preview at Hong Kong’s Disneyland Resort to make the announcement. Kojima is the executive producer for the anime, and he was on stage with its director, Takayuki Sano.
It’s called Death Stranding Isolations, but this is remarked as a working title. It will tell a completely unique story, so there will be no Norman Reedus as Sam or any of the other famous faces from the game such as Lea Seydoux. Its story will also be told through traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation style courtesy of some of Japan’s top animation talent at E&H production.
With Sam out of the picture, the characters this time include an “old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges”. There’s also a “female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting,” as well as a “boy with a grudge against Bridges” and a “girl who embraces loneliness”.
Hideo Kojima is Not Going to Make Death Stranding 3
Hideo Kojima has previously said he is not going to make Death Stranding 3. Earlier this year, Kojima said he has a great idea for Death Stranding 3, but someone else will need to make it for it to see the light of day. Kojima didn’t elaborate on his great idea, but he pointed out that Death Stranding could have “endless sequels” because of the “Plate Gate concept,” but that’s something he doesn’t “have any plans to do”.
Kojima not making a third instalment makes sense as he is currently occupied with the horror game OD. This is a unique horror project involving multiple famous creators such as Jordan Peele, and Kojima has said he wants to “scan a ghost for the first time”. Beyond OD, Kojima is also working on Physint, which is a return to the espionage genre similar to Metal Gear Solid.
After these two games, Kojima has said he wants to make a movie for Hollywood. Directing a film for Hollywood has always been a goal, and Kojima recognizes that he’ll probably be in his late sixties after finishing Physint. This will be the moment to make a movie as Kojima fears he’ll be “too old in the future”.
Aside from the Death Stranding anime, there is also a movie in-development from A24. It will tell an original story also, and its director is Michael Sarnoski who helmed A Quiet Place Day One.
