In case you missed it, Guy ‘Dr Disrespect’ Beahm revealed the first footage of his new studio’s first game – ‘vertical shooter’ Deadrop – over the weekend.

What is Deadrop?

But what is Deadrop? The developer, Midnight Society, has called it a ‘Vertical Extraction Shooter’ or ‘VES’ for short. As to what that means, it’s currently unclear. We know it’ll take place in arenas made up of what they’re calling ‘Refiner States’. These sound like factory like structures, occupied by forces called Cleaners. They’ll be hording resources and gear, and other factions who are fighting for control of these Refiner States.

Who are Midnight Society?

We know a little more about the development team. Midnight Society is a relatively new studio, but has some well known names behind it. Guy ‘Dr Disrespect’ Beahm. The controversial YouTube streamer is well known for streaming battle royale games, like Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone. Midnight Society’s other big names include Robert Bowling, who was the former Creative Strategist on the Call of Duty series. There’s also creative director Quinn DelHoyo, who was previously the lead sandbox designer on Halo Infinite.

The studio was formally revealed at the tail end of 2021. At the time, the studio said it wanted to involve influencers, gamers and fans in every part of the development process. To that end, the team made the decision to partner with a Web3 company known as Polygon to offer Access Passes via NFTs. It’s through these passes that the studio is releasing snapshots of the game every six weeks. The first of these was revealed this past weekend.

What’s in Deadrop so far, and is there a release date?

This snapshot includes a player hideout and a small firing range, with just one weapon. Reaction to the snapshot has been mixed so far, with some people likening it to an “awkward 00s budget shooter“. However, it’s worth noting that it seems to be incredibly early days yet. At the time of writing, we don’t even know platforms or an ETA. So for now, a release date is likely years away.
