Hidetaka ‘Swery’ Suehiro, best-known for his work on Deadly Premonition and D4, has revealed that his next game will be a mystery RPG. But the people all turn into cats.

The Good Life is a mystery RPG, set in the fictional English town of Rainy Woods where ‘all the town’s residents turn into cats’ at night. True to form for the creator of some of the most bizarre games, The Good Life looks as crazy as a bag of cats. In this case, we can assume that’s intended.

Players take on the role of Naomi, a heavily in-debt photographer from New York who’s found ‘herself stuck in this small town in rural England’ trying to find out what’s going on. Once night comes even Naomi turns into a cat, and, just like the residents of this small town, she can’t remember what’s happened the night before.

As the sun sets, players get to explore Rainy Woods, collecting clues that are important to solving this mysterious transformation. The transition into a feline-state brings with it gameplay changes, ‘as certain secret paths, rooftops, and attics can only be accessed by cats’.

Swery has said that The Good Life ‘will inherit the spirit of Deadly Premonition (whose original working title was Rainy Woods), my most representative work, but it will also feature a brand new style of gameplay. It’s a mystery game based on the framework of a ‘daily life RPG’.

The Good Life is the debut title from Swery’s newly funded indie studio, White Owls. It’ll be crowdfunded through Fig, with the funding campaign beginning on September 2, 2017.
