The first “console prototype” of DayZ is not due to be completed until early 2016, Bohemia Interactive has revealed, ruling out a surprise release on PS4 and Xbox One later this year.

Taking to Twitter, Bohemia said: “Alright everyone, let’s make this news stand out a bit: DayZ won’t hit the Xbox Game Preview program this year.”

“The main focus of the @dayzdevteam is the PC version,” the publisher continued, “while a first console prototype is expected in Q1 2016”.

It isn’t clear from the comments whether the prototype will be available publicly or simply act as an internal milestone in the game’s console development.

DayZ was announced for console in August 2014, although there have been few updates on the project since. The final PC version is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2016.

The game’s creator Dean Hall, meanwhile, left Bohemia last December to open new studio RocketWerkz. The studio’s first project, ION, is described as a “truly-emergent massively-multiplayer online game in which players will build, live in and inevitably die in player created galactic constructions”.
