Last week saw a massive and impressive update to No Man’s Sky. The Worlds Part 1 overhaul saw the game’s procedural generation algorithms re-written entirely, alongside the transfer over to the Light No Fire tech engine. Perhaps there’s a big story to be told here though. Data-miners peeking under the hood have a reference to Trinity, the alleged code-name for the PS5 Pro.
Sourced via Twitter, @bomber_that is the individual who first encountered this reference. Unfortunately, if there was a worse game for this information to be found in, it’s No Man’s Sky. Despite the recent overhaul, it’s not a particularly taxing game on the PS5’s hardware, so comparing the presets against each other expectedly shows little variation.
The main difference can be found in the reference to WaterQuality, which flips between Ultra on the Pro and High on the base console. Aside from the other change to the LowestDynamicResScalingFactor, there’s not a whole much of difference. As mentioned before, that’s likely due to the fact that No Man’s Sky developers simply have no reason to go beyond this in terms of fidelity. Had this been another title that struggles notoriously on the PS5 – Final Fantasy XVI or Dragon’s Dogma 2 – then we could have had a bit more of a noteworthy comparison.
While we don’t know much about the PS5 Pro’s specs aside from rumours and leaks, it’s expected to feature a much higher frequency processor alongside a slight increase to system memory. The big kicker is the enhanced ray tracing capabilities; one of the main selling points that PlayStation is pushing for developers to focus on.
The PS5 Pro has been a strong focus of news headlines recently thanks to Tom Henderson’s pretty unhelpful news that it either is, or isn’t, coming this year. Since that tweet, the rumour mill has been pretty consistent with churning out a new reading here or there about when exactly it’s coming. The reality is that we simply don’t know, but at least we’ve seen official reference to the Trinity codename now, all the more cementing the console as a possibility.
