Dark Souls 3 will have fewer locations than its predecessor, but they will be larger in size, according to the game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Miyazaki explained the change in map scale.

“The number of the areas will be lesser compared to Dark Souls 2. However, the size of each map will be bigger,” he said. “Honestly speaking, doing exploration of each map within Dark Souls 3 is really, really fun, so please wait for further updates.”

Miyazaki also went on to discuss that bonfire warping will be making a return, but the respawn system itself will undergo some adjustments.

“The respawn system that you have seen in Dark Souls 2 will not be reproduced in Dark Souls 3,” Miyazaki said. “That’s because the philosophy to production towards each title is different. As you can see, our focus in Dark Souls 3 is for players to overcome difficult situations or tough enemies through observations.”

Miyazaki appears to suggest that, whereas in previous Souls games players were kicked back to the last bonfire rested at upon death, we could find ourselves respawning much closer to where we die this time round, giving players a chance to learn from mistakes sooner.

Dark Souls 3 launches early 2016 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
