Competitive and coop modes confirmed for Uncharted 2

Sony has confirmed that hotly anticipated PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will have online competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes.

The sequel to the excellent Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune will feature up to 10 players in five versus five competitive gameplay. A robust party system is promised, one that will allow groups of players to remain together in ranked and custom matches while earning currency, which used in combination with currency earned in single player missions to unlock additional content and upgrades.

Competitive ranked matches include Team Death Match and Capture the Treasure, a unique style of multiplayer competition that encourages team work to transport a treasure over dynamic terrain such as ledges and obstacles.

Maps will be based on environments from the single player campaign, including night time streets of a war torn city to a Nepalese village. You’ll also be able to create custom games.

Cooperative multiplayer, on the other hand, allows up to three players to work together to accomplish set objectives. It is unclear at this point whether the story campaign will alter depending on the number of players.

“Adding a multiplayer aspect to the UNCHARTED franchise is a significant step in the re-playability of the game,” said Christophe Balestra, co president of developer Naughty Dog. “UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves will be the most impressive and ambitious game that Naughty Dog has done and we are thrilled to let our fans experience it this fall.”

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the story of Nathan Drake, a fortune-hunter with a shady reputation who is lured back into the treacherous world of thieves and mercenary treasure-seekers. Players will be able to take control of Drake and embark on a journey that will push him to his physical, emotional and intellectual limits to discover the real truth behind the lost fleet of Marco Polo and the legendary Himalayan valley of Shambhala.
