The creativity of Fortnite creators knows no bounds, and now the latest creation wowing the community is a recreation of an iconic 1993 FPS in the original Doom.

Playfully entitled Boom, user Luxx-XR is currently meticulously recreating the classic levels from the first person shooter in Fortnite’s Unreal Engine – with an incredible attention to detail. Despite Fortnite usually letting you see the action from a third-person perspective, thanks to some clever fooling around with the UI, Luxx manages to recreate the FPS viewpoint, even down to the pixelated hand and gun in the center of the screen – and even framed the usual Fortnite health, armour and weapon elements to fit in the theme. All that’s missing is the iconic portrait that gets more bloody the less health you have.

Explosive barrels, wall textures – everything is present and correct. The attention to detail even stretches to the bad guys, with their placement exactly how you’d expect them from the original game. The only thing that pulls you out slightly is how they animate with the more modern animation models, but again – it’s a tiny thing to complain about when you consider the work that’s gone into the recreation. At the time of writing, Luxx has created six episodes so far plus an overworld map – having just finished Episode 6. There’s even four difficulty settings to really challenge you. He hopes to keep improving these – including honouring requests to animate the gun – but he’s done such a good job so far, with the mod taking us right back to 1993.

If you want to try the maps yourself, just use the Island Code 9029-5321-2209 for the latest Level 6 of Boom. Or you can check out all seven of the Boom levels here. Of course, Doom is no stranger to the world of Fortnite – given Doom Guy (the modern version from the 2016 game) was previously available as a battle pass skin, so this user-made creation already has a decent fanbase. Hopefully, it won’t suffer the same fate as the Fortnite Call of Duty maps though, which were recently struck with a copyright claim from Activision. Especially as Doom is under Microsoft, who now also own the Call of Duty maker.
