Activision has confirmed the first details on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Zombies campaign, and it sounds like it's not really mucking with an established formula.

You'll once again be fending off waves of shambling corpses with up to four players in co-op, while the whole thing is propelled along by a barmy science-fiction narrative that you probably won't be paying too much attention to.

It all revolves around 'an ancient order hell-bent on transforming the world to fulfill their nefarious agenda.'  Sounds a lot like an episode from Tales of the Crypt to us, but there we go.

Anyway, the action focuses on four time-travelling heroes — Scarlet, Bruno, Diego, and Shaw — who must secure a mysterious artifact to put a stop to the evil organisation's dead-raising antics. There's three maps in total: IX, Voyage of Despair (which seems to take place on the RMS Titanic), and Blood of the Dead.

Black Ops 4's Zombies will add a few wrinkles to the established formula, however. Chief among these new additions include Callings, which are post-release updates that add limited-time challenges and seasonal content.

There's also a new Mutation feature that lets you tinker with various attributes, including zombie speed and player damage. Zombie Rush meanwhile is a new mode that is targeted at beginners by simplifying the experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is due for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on October 12. The game will include a battle royale mode titled Blackout, though controversially will not feature a traditional single-player campaign.
