Activision has confirmed previous rumours that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will feature a battle royale mode.

Battle royale has been popularised in recent months by the likes of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite, and makes its Call of Duty debut in the shape of Blackout. It'll feature the biggest map that developer Treyarch has ever made, some 1,500 times larger than Nuketown.

Speaking during a live event for the upcoming first-person shooter, the game's Design Director, David Vonderhaar, said: 'For us to even consider this experience it had to be unique and done in the way that only Black Ops can do it.'

Blackout will attempt to differentiate itself from the competition by amping up the vehicle side of things, with air, land, and sea options available. Futuristic weapons will be making a comeback (it's set between the events of Black Ops 2 and 3, says Activision) and we're also promised class-based character customisation.

The battle royale mode seems to be an amalgamation of various Black Ops franchise staples, as it's been confirmed that familiar faces such as Jason Hudson, Alex Mason, and Viktor Reznov as well as elements plucked from the series' Zombies campaigns will be putting in an appearance.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is pencilled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on October 12.
