Gearbox’s Borderlands series has been stuck in the mid 2000s, with the last game in the series struggling to make a dent in pop culture like its predecessors did. With the recently shown-off Borderlands 4, Gearbox is seemingly making a slightly more mature entry in the series, but some fans aren’t convinced.

In a thread on social media, Borderlands 4 narrative director Sam Winkler revealed that the game will cut down heavily on the last game’s “overabundance of toilet humor”. As the game’s team have matured, as well as its audience, the game’s developer promised that no Skibidi Toilet or Hawk Tuah jokes will be in the game.

(Update: Borderlands may be above adding Skibidi Toilet, but Fortnite isn’t. Pray for us.)

Borderlands 4 jokes may actually be funny

Speaking to fans on Twitter, Winkler explained that they aren’t “at liberty to talk much about the content of BL4”, but the team is keen to avoid the pitfalls of the previous game’s writing. While the third game did have a strong gameplay overhaul compared to its predecessor, the writing was a clear let down.

Winkler explained that the game has made strong use of “contract writers” during its development that allowed the team to “work with some of the funniest people” in the industry. With this in mind, the team appears to be keen to avoid low-hanging fruit with the narrative director completely against any inclusion of Skibidi Toilet and Hawk Tuah jokes in the game.

“I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets,” Winkler said. “But if the word ‘Skibidi’ ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears.”

Over the past few months, viral tweets have made the rounds claiming there will be a gun dubbed “Hawk-2A” in Borderlands 4, referencing the bizarely popular meme-turned-podcast-turned-crypto-scheme.

“A fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder,” Winkler said to fans.

There’s currently no concrete release day for Borderlands 4, but the game is scheduled to launch sometime in 2025. Considering the release structure of previous games in the series, the game will likely release sometime in Fall 2025. However, with GTA 6 aiming for the same release period, it could launch earlier.
