As part of the annual Game Awards celebrations, Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 4 has received its first official gameplay. Following a teaser released during Summer Games Fest, this new trailer offers players their first true look at the new looter shooter game.

New Borderlands 4 trailer

As one of the few confirmed appearances at The Game Awards 2024, Gearbox’s Borderlands 4 has made its explosive debut. After a disappointing predecessor, the new first-person RPG is back, but can it capture the brilliance of the series’ first and second games?

Announced alongside The Witcher 4, a new Elden Ring game and an immersive sim from Deus Ex creator Warren Spector, Gearbox’s sequel is described as “the most ambitious Borderlands game yet”.

Releasing on Xbox Series, PS5 and PC, via Steam this time, the new Borderlands 4 trailer picks up directly after the events of the teaser trailer. Showing a more mutated, dour version of Pandora following the previous game’s ending, players are taking up arms against a new villain as the a large-scale battle kicks off for the world.

Alongside the advanced movement of the previous game, players will be able to make use of a whole new cast of characters. Furthermore, movement has been evening further expanded with a new grappling hook that lets players quickly close the distance against foes.

Gearbox confirmed that the story will see players fight to free Pandora from the Timekeeper, a “ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high”.

“Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits, and vicious beasts. Amass an arsenal of death-dealing firepower to wreak havoc as you tear your way across Kairos,” reads the game’s synopsis. “Fight solo or in co-op with up to three other players in this immense sci-fi adventure, packed with free-form combat and exploration, pulse-pounding boss fights, infinitely varied loot drops, and an eclectic cast of unforgettable characters new and old.”

Borderlands 4 releases sometime in 2025 for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5 and PC.
