World of Warcraft remains the number one subscription MMO with approximately 10.2 million subscribers, Activision Blizzard has announced.

Maintaining the subscriber number of the previous quarter is being seen as a positive sign for the future of WoW, having previously seen significant falls – down from 11.4 million subscribers this time last year.

“Maintaining our subscribers level puts us in a great position,” said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, during last night’s first quarter earnings call.

National Alliance Capital Markets Mike Hickey believes the stable subscriber base shows that WoW can fend off the likes of EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, which took a 400,000 hit on its userbase between January and March.

“To have a stable subscriber base given the nature of the markets that we’re in and the competitive threats is a real testament to the strength of the franchise,” Hickey said.

With World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria on the horizon, SWTOR is set to feel the full force of Blizzard’s power over the MMO market.
