Map design in the Call of Duty franchise often makes or breaks an annual release. Battlegrounds that utilise a three-lane structure with a handful of chokepoints guarantee competitive matches while those that rely on elements of verticality struggle to earn a seal of approval from players loading into the action.
As part of the Season 2 Reloaded update for Black Ops 6, Treyarch is taking its unique map design philosophy to another level in the form of Bullet. Inspired by the Japanese bullet train, the unique layout has already sparked mass debate among players wanting to see whether it’s fun or if it’s a flop.
Black Ops 6 Bullet map features most unusual design
The majority of battlegrounds in Black Ops 6 feature three lanes allowing players to flank behind enemy lines and catch the opposition by surprise. For Bullet, there’s only one lane meaning there’s no way to escape the incoming gunfire.
One lane for a map where fast-paced gameplay and the ability to manipulate spawns is a questionable decision from Treyarch. While the Black Ops developer is attempting something to inject a breath of fresh air into multiplayer, straying away from a tried and tested formula is risky.
Black Ops 6’s battlegrounds aren’t the best in the franchise despite maintaining the three-lane structure that’s provided so much success in previous years. Even with a few remastered maps thrown in for a hit of nostalgia, the existing selection of maps shows no sign of improving with the addition of Bullet.
Will risky map design pay off?
While Bullet is designed for two-versus-two and six-versus-six matches, the map is likely to strike a chord with some players looking for the same amount of all-out chaos maps such as Nuketown and Shipment have provided in the past.
Depending on the popularity of Bullet and its single-lane layout, there’s always a chance Treyarch decides to double down on the unorthodox design as part of future updates but for now, this particular map will become as unpopular as Santa Sena Border Crossing from 2022’s Modern Warfare 2.
