Game Science’s new AAA action game Black Myth: Wukong has shattered sales expectations, selling out PS5 consoles in its home country of China. With the single-player title’s newfound popularity, more AAA games are expected to release in the region.
Typically relegated to mobile releases and gacha games, Black Myth: Wukong marks the start of a new era for Chinese gaming. With investors at the ready, the country’s AAA gaming space is about to expand massively.
Black Myth will result in more Chinese AAA games
Speaking to CNBC, Chinese investor Dino Ying explained that the game’s success could change the market completely. As an early investor in Black Myth developer Game Science, and the chairman of Hero Games, Ying sees the potential in more AAA releases.
The investor revealed that he has already invested in another AAA game in development in China. However, he refused to state what game that is or when the title can be expected to release.
“I think the next triple-A game is likely very close, because Black Myth: Wukong has shown everyone that a China-made AAA game can reach such high global sales,” the investor explained.
Chinese investors are already supporting new AAA games following the success of Wukong.
While China does have a large gaming industry, many of its games do not release globally. However, the success of Wukong has caused many to believe the country is ready to expand its releases worldwide. However, due to its large population, Chinese games will focus on Chinese gamers.
“China is a big country. We’re talking about 1 million concurrent players. China has 600 million gamers,” they said.
A new culture to explore
Based on one of China’s most famous stories, Black Myth: Wukong is a deep exploration of Journey to the West. Ying explains that these classic stories will be represented in future AAA Chinese games.
“If I create a new thing, I don’t know if people will like it. But something that’s lasted 1,000 years, people will definitely like it. We don’t know why it was preserved over so many years. But we just need to respect the [original] artisans,” the investor claimed.
Whatever the case, Chinese culture is rarely explored in huge blockbuster games. With Black Myth: Wukong’s success, a new generation with a new focus is approaching.
