2K’s BioShock Infinite was the No.1 selling video game of March in the US, selling 878,000 copies at retail (data supplied by Cowen and Company).

Infinite set a first month sales record for the BioShock franchise, as did Square Enix’s Tomb Raider which charted at No.2.

Cowen and Company now estimates that BioShock Infinite will go on to sell 4.5 million copies during its first year on sale.

Gears of War Judgment takes third, God of War: Ascension is in fourth and Black Ops 2 comes in at No.5.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 placed at No.6 with 365,000 copies, whilst the pretty terrible The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is new at No.9.

Xbox 360 continues its dominance of the US hardware chart, shifting 261,000 units, marking the 27th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the US. Sales figures for other platforms haven’t been released.

Overall total video games industry sales are down 10 per cent year-on-year to $992.5 million. Hardware sales took a 32 per cent drop, whilst software sales actually managed a two per cent rise – the first month since November 2011 where retail spending on entertainment software experienced positive growth.
