Microsoft and 343 Industries finally announced Halo 4 at E3 last month, but it seems the game has been in secret development for several years already.
Speaking at the Halo Comic-Con 2011 panel, 343 Industries franchise development director Frank O’Connor revealed the studio’s relief in unveiling the game, having been working on the title in “relative secrecy for a couple of years.”
The panel also featured New York Times best-selling authors Greg Bear and Karen Traviss, in attendance to discuss their upcoming Halo novels. Halo: Grasslands from Traviss will fill in the blanks between Halo 3 and Halo 4 – the time in which Master Chief is floating around in space. Traviss revealed that her books will focus on some of the franchise’s lesser known characters, such as the Office of Naval Intelligence.
While Traviss’ book looks to move the franchise forward, Bear’s Halo: Cryptum digs deeper in the story of the Precursors and Forerunners, revealing exactly what the Precursors did and what their Halo program was designed for.
Both books are nearing completion.
Halo 4 will be released in holiday season 2012.
