EA and Battlefield Studios gloriously announced Battlefield 6 earlier today, a beautiful return to the series’ classic formula with epic destruction and a modern military setting.

While we’re still penning our preview based on our own hours of gameplay, we had a chance to sit down and chat with the team about the upcoming multiplayer FPS game.

With the team boasting a beautiful return to “gritty, realistic” gameplay, one fear remains. As other games dilute their own aesthetics with flashy effects, cartoonish skins and countless crossover skins, will Battlefield 6 stick to its tried and true form? Well, the answer is inconclusive, but it certainly seems positive.

Don’t expect this scenario in Battlefield 6.

Are bogus skins coming to Battlefield 6?

Speaking to VideoGamer at the Battlefield 6 reveal event in London, UX director Alan Pimm didn’t confirm whether or not bizarre microtransaction skins would creep their way into the game, but it does seem very unlikely.

When asked whether there will be a limit of bizarre crossover skins that break the aesthetic of Battlefield, Pimm explained that “skins are not my field of expertise”. However, the director did quell fears that the new game will break the modern military look we adore.

“They will be handled by other teams,” Pimm said. “What I can tell you is I don’t know of any plans and, at the moment, that package is the ‘gritty realism’ and that we listen. That I can tell you.”

Throughout our experience at the Battlefield 6 reveal event, the “gritty realism” buzzword was used extensively. From describing the feel of guns to the apex of destruction to the look of everything, Battlefield Studios is doubling down on the term.

Pimm explained that the teams behind the FPS game specifically looked into the series’ past to see what truly worked across the franchise, seemingly with a focus on Battlefield 3 and 4. It’s a true return-to-form, and we hope it stays that way.

While the studio isn’t ruling out some leniency on skins, it seems like the team won’t be diving into Gundam crossovers and Nikki Minaj outfits, although we’d be surprised if something isn’t around the corner.

That’s not to say Battlefield 6 is completely serious. The game is boldly bringing back Battlefield Portal, a tool that allows players to create all manner of zany maps and game modes. However, for the core experience, all we’ve heard is the term “realism” thrown around all day, and 90s cartoon characters don’t really scream realism, do they?
