Three of the developers behind EA’s Battlefield 2 – James Salt, Jonas Ã…berg and Patrick O’Shaughnessy – were on the Quakenet IRC network last night for a live chat. The chat session, hosted by the Quakenet IRC network, gave gamers the opportunity to ask questions on the game and focused primarily on the upcoming 1.03 patch, which is set to fix the majority of bugs that gamers are currently experiencing.

In regards to when the patch will be released, DICE said:

“We’re working hard on finishing up the last few fixes of the 1.03 patch and getting it through testing for release. There are a lot of great fixes and we want to make sure its done right. That said. It will be released …when it’s done.“

The staff also confirmed multiple bug fixes in the patch, as well as a few new features and refinements:

“What are the main fixes in this patch?“

DICE: “I think one of the more popular ones will be that players have to get out of a Blackhawk to capture a flag. Now in a full Blackhawk only the pilot counts in the flag capture radius.“

“Well i don’t know if it was discussed here, but I’d like to ask why involve jet aircraft in this game… it makes it awfully unbalanced, as it is nearly impossible to hit it from the ground“

DICE: “We’ve actually tweaked the AA missile behaviour in the upcoming patch. The Stingers/IGLA and various AA vehicles should be more effective.“

“Will you be able to see the names of players in the same vehicle in the new patch?“

DICE: “Yes.“

“Hello. Kinda related to #5 actually, I was wondering.. The game is brilliant and so realistic in many ways.. but theres some not so realistic stuff too.. If your in a huge tank and moving at full speed, into a thin fence or gate.. You get hurt, Instead of being able to smash right through, Would be so much more realistic if that was possible, Even into walls and stuff. Also I noticed, you cant get in any buildings where theres door.“

DICE: “This is mostly due to the game having to run over a network. We have a limit on the number of destroyable objects we can have in the world. As they all have to be synched to the other clients, along with the other networking data. So here we all think it would be really great to have lots and lots of destroyable things, but ultimately we have to concentrate on the main things that need networking, like soldiers and vehicles…“
